Mike Sutherland
Manitoba First Nations
Biography
Mike Sutherland is from Peguis First Nation and is married to Sharon. They have 2 children and 3 grand-children.
Mike spent over 40 years on his grandfather’s trapline, so he grew up on the land as a hunter trapper fisherman. The land and our elders have been his teacher and as he heads into his senior years, he does what he can to pass on the knowledge and teaching that have been taught to him.
Mike is the Director of the “Peguis Consultation & Special Projects Unit Inc.” for Peguis First Nation since 2017 and has been building this unit since 2012 when he was on Council.
He was recruited to participate in the Line 3 replacement project in 2017 or 2018 and has been a part of this process for the past 5 years. Mike is thankful that he was able to become a part of this project and process as it really opened his eyes and helped him better understand the Federal Regulatory process for major projects here in Canada.
“We have come a long way and have had our ups & downs but in the end, we are still in the room, and I hope as long as we are in the room, we will eventually make a difference when it comes to protecting our lands, waters and future for our next generations to come.”
