Biography

Desmond Gould brings extensive experience working with Indigenous Nations in relation to the Enbridge Pipeline, making him a strong addition to the Line 3 Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committee (IAMC).

Originally from the Pinaymootang First Nation in Manitoba, Desmond has worked in several First Nations communities throughout his career. This experience provided a deep understanding of the dynamics within different Nations and the importance of protecting their lands and waters. He has supported Indigenous Nations in building partnerships that advance environmental stewardship and meaningful participation in land and resource protection.

Growing up in a commercial fishing and cattle ranching family in Pinaymootang, Desmond learned the value of hard work and connection to the land. He began his career in the fishing industry and later attended the University of Manitoba before joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in December 1983.

After completing training, he served as a Native RCMP Special Constable Member in Norway House, Manitoba, working in close partnership with inland Nations and gaining valuable experience in diverse community settings. Over a 26-year RCMP career, he was posted in multiple locations including Norway House, Grand Rapids/Easterville, and Winnipeg. He retired from the RCMP as a Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of the Dauphin RCMP Detachment after 26 years of service.

In 2010, Desmond and his wife Brenda purchased and operated a restaurant and bowling alley, employing 13 staff members. He later returned to community service in June 2015, joining Swan Lake First Nation as Director of Operations. In this role, he oversaw governance, financial management, people management, and project delivery. He retired from this position in September 2021.

Desmond currently performs contract work for Pinaymootang First Nation, where the Nation recognizes him as their Director of Operations. He has served in this capacity since December 7, 2021.
